"Can you imagine forcing your pet dog to live his or her entire life in a small wire cage with no human companionship, toys or comfort, and little hope of ever becoming part of a family? That is what life is like for a puppy mill breeding dog." (quote from HSUS)

The conditions at a puppy mill are overcrowded and unsanitary, with dogs living in their own feces. Breeder dogs and puppies do not get proper food, water, veterinary care or socialization. Many breeder dogs at puppy mills might spend their entire lives outdoors, or crammed inside filthy structures where they never get a breath of fresh air.

After a life of suffering alone in a cage, never having put a paw on the grass, breeding females are often killed and discarded. Many puppies arrive at pet stores with diseases and illnesses.

Pet stores that sell puppies and kittens acquire them from puppy mills and backyard breeders. Backyard breeders are referred to by pet stores as "local breeders." Purchasing a puppy from a pet store contributes to the horrific cycle of suffering for breeder dogs. Responsible breeders do not sell animals to pet stores. If you do purchase an animal from a breeder, it is best to see the conditions of the breeding facility instead of "ordering online."

Here at D.I.N.E. we believe in adopting dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from animal rescues and shelters. They are the animals that need us the most. Please do not support puppy mills, backyard breeders and pet stores!

Typical conditions at a puppy mill
This pug, from an Ohio puppy mill, had an untreated, unknown injury to his eye which hardened over and gave the appearance of a wooden eye. This injury is many months old and was never treated. After being removed from the puppy mill, his damaged eye was removed. The picture to the right is a poodle from an Ohio  puppy mill who had to have most of her teeth removed. Notice her inflamed red gums.

Below are more photos of dogs from puppy mills.
